Candle Magick

As a candle burns it releases not only it's wax but it's color into the atmosphere. Whatever has been connected with the candle as in the form of embedded energy or written on the candle will transmigrate to a plane where it can do what you have intended and focused on it to do. A candle, like everything else used for a magickal purpose, has to be consecrated. Use the general consecration for candles. They are creatures of Fire or of Art. Make sure to check the Moon phase before working any spell. The phase of the Moon will greatly affect the outcome of your spell. After consecration a candle must be dressed. This consists of anointing the candle with a special oil you have chosen for the purpose in mind. There are many other things you can do to embed a candle to your purpose. You can etch runes in it; a name on it; a purpose for it to perform.. Really the list is endless.

Candle magick works on the following principles:
The color of the Candle
The type of oil you use to dress it
The sigils you carve (or do not carve) upon it
The sort of divinity you call as you light it.

You can make candle magick complicated, if you like. This involves the array of colors, deities, oils and the use of timing. There are five day candle spells, seven day candle spells, ninety day candle spell. Tarot candle spells, astrological candle spells, and planetary candle spells.
Timed spells required specific number of candles to be burned on a specific day or number of days and at the same time each day for a set period of time. A whole ritual can be written around a candle spell.
In short, there is no end to your ingenuity in working with candle magick it is fun, inexpensive. Candle spells usually involve chanting, a poem or charm as well as raising energy. Most Wiccan students are taught candle magick early in their training in order to give them confidence when they continue to the more difficult aspects of the various magickal operations.

Candle magick is versatile and is used by adepts to center and focus. Black, Red, and White are the primary candle colors, and you will find that Witches who have been working for many years will stick with these colors and don't worry about the others. Part of this is due to practicality and their excellent visualization skills, while still using the magickal colors of teir ancestors.

In all fairness to the magickal community, knowing a few working witches who do not use candles at all and scoff at the intersting things you can do with them.

What you believe is entirely your business. Remember that the Wiccan way is not to rain on someone else's magickal parade. If someone is tied to candles and their magick and you are not, so be it.

Candle carving has been widely used in magic, especially the carved Pentagram. The symbols (Runes are very useful) can also be drawn on parchment or paper with ink the color of the candle. A white candle plus the ink symbols can substitute for any colored candle if...the ink is the color your candle would be or needed for that intent.

The reason I say this is because eventially a person can learn to visualize a color along with whatever colors they are using. Someone who has been practicing for a while might become lazy and not keep stocked up with other candle colors. For me, I went to white only since I worked with stones plus ink symbols a lot. You can get by using only primary color candles, but I don'r recommend new people do it. Wait until you've been practicing a few years and start feeling lazy about stocking up on colored candles.

You're welcome! I've made some posts here in the forum already about Runes. My old profile was Spiralwind before it got messed up. I tried to change the email. The reason it messed up, the email address was at a domain which had been down and now no longer in existence. The profile had frozen up!

I will mention something here, avoid ballpoint or roller pens and markers. Something happens to the magic because the ink flows around the tiny metal ball. It makes some obstacle roll across your path in most spells. The spells work, but after what seems like a psychic attack.

Felt tip pens are good, both permanent and washable. Dip pens, feather quill pens, even paint/paintbrush. I've seen one post here on the forum where someone mentioned color crayons for a ritual. I had bought some once to try, never got around to it. You could get fancy and formulate your own ritual inks, get parchment and use a Swan quill pen. Occult supply places used to have the Swan quill pens, maybe they still do...or perhaps that part of Witchcraft is a lost art.

I've seen one post here on the forum where someone mentioned color crayons for a ritual.

Crayons are not constant, i mean while writing, if you've noticed, they sometimes tend to make just some dots. But that can be avoided by overwriting. But in roller and ball pens, the ink is making another way around the ball, maybe it just depends on how comfortable you are with the stuff you are using.

I've used the rollers in the past and tried looking at it a different way. I decided it might be ok for some spells. So, was using black ink for moon phase symbols in a charm bag with herbs. The spell was to increase your psychic vision and abilities. Some things happened which normally wouldn't take place using a spell like that. The round shape apparently opened the door into another realm, one people should probably stay out of. For the few months I kept the charm bag, the same experience happened about every 1-2 weeks. This vision would start out as a round shape, growing larger until clear. It turned into the full moon and the surface clear enough to see the craters, etc. Then an astral type journey began as this voice from the moon sounded, deep bass tone almost like that of a god.

A couple years later did try using it just as a psychic spell, but not in a charm bag. I had some amazing experiences, it sure doesn't seem safe to me. So, I don't use the rollers for any ritual now. Prosperity or money spells. (Edit here: is referring to ballpoint pens or roller markers) just as it starts working good, rolls an obstacle across your path. You can kind of spiritually jump to avoid it, but why take the risk...

I havent tried roller yet, but yeah they might prove good for money spells or where things need to be done. But what about pencils?? Graphite. Has anyone tried??

Graphite, I'm not sure exactly...have used them a couple times. It doesn't seem to be any color but maybe similar to metallic silver. Don't know for sure, is somewhat conductive.

I dont think being conductive should have any effect, but i was asking about it because of the color, it is kinda silver or dark gray, so somewhere in between. Graphite's structure is somewhat similar to diamond, not sure it that counts for effects or not.

That is something I thought of also, what you mentioned similar to diamond. Someone will have to find out.

Hi ive used and still using cobalt blue powder, its a bit pricey in the specialist art shops but ive had good results with the runes and a small bottle lasts a life time, i only use balck or white candles and use a little blood to mark the candle it seems to work pretty well because your giving some thing of yourself and a small cut on the finger heals pretty quick, but i dont use candles all the time only for something i really want/need. That was a good article to find.

In some spells, they actually have you melt the crayon and use it to dye wax a particular color. The problem with this technique is that you don't always know how consistent your color is, and you often need more than just one of one color in order for it to work. I've also heard people complain about the wax texture, but I haven't tried it myself. I use candle wax dye, so I get consistent results.

Another good way to draw apon things for magical uses would be the dip pen.
