From what I can gather: all you need is free-will, but I'm sure results will vary. I don't think a little herb will hurt a thing!

For witchcraft? I'd say yes. The use of plants and herbs are pretty central in witchcraft across cultures. As for magic as a whole, not necessarily!

I don't think so. I started out with simple items, herbs not being one of them.
I am the Earth, The Sun and the Stars
And I am the also the Moon
I am all animal and birds,
And I am the outcast as well, and the thief
I am the low person of dreadful deeds,
And the great person of excellent deeds
I am Female. I am Male and I am Neuter.

Nothing in particular is required for witchcraft. The craft is an individual thing for all of us. Much of magic involves mental focus and energy. Things like herbs are often meant to reach our subconscious mind and open it in ways that we can't often manage consciously. They provide certain energies and focus, but they are less important than your mind itself.

Obviously, there are times when herbs are needed. If you are practicing herbal potions for medicinal purposes, obviously you need herbs. But there are a lot of spells that don't require herbs, at all.

I will say that having an herb garden helps me to tune in to the cycles of nature, because I can see the day to day changes in my own yard. I feel like the work of planting, tending, and harvesting helps me to connect to the natural divine. It would be a good idea, if possible, to raise something, even if it is just a few kitchen herbs in a box, just for that reason. While I use what I grow, I can't possibly grow everything that I use. In this day and age, you can order anything online, and i make frequent trips to the witch store here in town.

So the answer (for me) is no, they aren't required. You can find many spells that use other things from tarot cards and runes to stones, candles and feathers, but if you want to explore herb magic, then you should.

Witchcraft is diverse and personal. If there is one thing that I've learned in a short time, it's that there are very few concrete answers that pertain to all of us.
