How does it work? - My theory on "how it works" is: thought begins as light which stirs unformed, etheric matter from passive to active energy & motion attracts elemental matter matching the frequency of the intent. When enough mass is attained the intent manifests in space & time.
What do you need? -
. Candles - white is all-purpose
. Holders for whichever size is used
. Sweet oil is a blend of olive (victory) & almond (luck) oils. It is an all purpose anointing oil to hold the psychic charge. Find it at pharmacies.
. Table salt is the go-to purifying agent - mix a pinch in
water; wipe-down 🕯with salt-water before use
How-to
. Incantations are the spoken words that state the desired results & set your intent. Rhyming helps the mind to focus. Say only what you do want results to be. An all-purpose example is, “Earth, Water, Air, Fire - work ye now as I desire - X I now acquire - by Earth, Water, Air, Fire.”
. Candles - Choose birthday candles, chimes, tapers or tea lights for the desired burn time & allow the candle to burn itself out during the spell. Discard stubs in the trash.
. PREP THE CANDLE - aka dress & charge the candle: dab five spots of oil on the candle & hold it between your palms as you repeat your incantation thrice. Push your intent into the candle. Think it - pull power on the breath from earth & sky to the belly & push out the hands
. The five-spots represent the elements & oil holds the psychic charge to the candle.
. Stand the cold candle in it’s holder.
. The spell: Light the 🕯candle and repeat incantation once more. Then sit quietly while focussing on the flame for a minute or so until the flame is all you see. Think of the final results you want & KNOW this feeling in your gut like a hunch. KNOWING is a slightly altered state of mind & is a witch’s power. Give thanks To the Powers. Let the candle burn completely (it’s ok to snuff a flame and relight if needed).
What do you use together? - it’s determined by your Intention & elemental association - Herb scents transmit a meaning quickly to the brain &
pleasant or
pungent suggests the use.
Methods of spells - bottle, candle, grids or mandalas, knots, petitions, potions, sigils

Herbal magick is based in the idea of a "fluid condenser" (Bardon).
You mix your herbs according to influence, and then charge them. After that, it depends on where you put them or how you burn them

Herbs are living things and therefore have inner spirit. Everything is Spirit. And one affects another when charged, or given instruction and requested to give aid to the cause. Growing herbs is the best way to make friends with the spirit of plants.

Re: Interested in herbal magic and candles
The Box of Shadows is a play on words for the Book of Shadows which was a term used by Gerald Gardner for the journal in which he recorded rituals, spells, and recipies. When he was writing in the 50s there were no how-to witchcraft books, not like today's market and Internet. In Gardner's time the coven had the master copy of their group rituals from which each member copied and then added onto their own personal copy as needed. We Solitaires write our own.

How to use Oils - dab oils on spell materials to transfer & hold the psychic charge of your intentions
. Scented oils match the scent to the intent. Simplified: use citrusy
scents for cleansing, sweet
scents for love, forest
scents for prosperity, and spicy🌶scents for protection. Note: incense would use the same scent themes. Plants have a variety of “sense-ual” and medicinal properties so consult the EUTM correspondences list.
