Alura posted some excellent information about cascarilla powder (powdered egg shells) a little while back.

It seems like egg shells act as a shield to negativity (the way the egg shells protect an egg) and offer protection, magically. As far as "universal" protection ingredients go (insofar as such a thing exists), I'd recommend salt, which is pretty commonly used as a purifying, protective force. People have been known to use both salt and cascarilla powder to cast circles.

In general, I'm one of the "intent matters more than ingredient" type of gal, so I would say that pretty much anything you can think of that you can associate with protection or purification, you can use. For example, in China red is commonly associated with joy, prosperity, and banishing demons, so if I were coming up with a protection spell, I might consider using a red string for protection, for instance.
