Plant of Protection

I am not sure if this is the place to post this so if it needs to be moved feel free to do so. There is a plant that was always planted by our back door and the door of most of my relatives, it is called Hens and Chicks (Sempervivum tectorum). It is said to bring protection against lighting strikes, fire and protection from theft and evil spirits. Is anyone here familar with this plant? I thought I had read something somewhere that had mentioned charging the plant or something like that, does anyone know what this means?

I'm not overly familiar with the plant itself, however my mom had them planted in the backyard of one of our houses when i was growing up. the years spent in that house were the most peaceful of my life.
