Many spell just seem like a large shopping List!

Do you find that some spell just seem like a large shopping list. What happen to simple spells. Just imagine early 1900 and earlier how hard it would have been to get some of this stuff. Even today with a computer it’s not always easy to find some herbs that are the real deal. AUTHENTIC.

The simpler the better for me.
Examples: Mayhayley Lancaster spell when a woman was worried her husband would leave her.

Jar with a lid

Your urine

Put the photo in the jar. Urinate on it and place the lid on tight. Then hide it in a dark place.
I did add my own twist to it. By writing his name on the back of the photo, then my name right on top of his. Make sure you do that put the other person on the bottom and you on top. Then I box it in. Worked so fast I was shocked.

I completly agree! I bought a book of spells for gris gris bags only to find they required so many ingredients, or as much as 9 candles! For example, i have no idea where to find john the conqueror root! Ill stick with simple spells, or just make up my own.

If I knew back then some of the stuff I know now I would not have been so timid and he would have had to keep that controlling dominates stuff under wraps.

I can feel you on the candle thing! I would like some people to tell me if they have used more then two candles and please what in the world were you doing in short. I've had two honey jars going. A protective candle and love or money. The most I've used at one time is 4

its kinda like putting on a play isnt it, some people like to go all out on the props, some people like to have little to none.

but as always you could adapt them to suit yourself better or even have a stab at writing your own.

The difference in what is used in a spell varies on who the spell is done from and who's doing the spell. For example, high ritual magic was created by rich people back in the day. It was studied by people with tons of resources, and was considered a science.

Folk magic tends to be to the point and more "use what you have". The two developed independently, and only now that being able to read is more universal, as well as the easy availability of information from cultures all over, we can finally compare notes.

Some of the research I did on wanga dolls went along this same vein. I stumbled upon a site by a woman who has been in the practice for several decades. She stated on her own site that oftentimes they used what was available in those days, and suggested using what you have available in your own part of the planet.

I, too, get a bit perplexed by the spells that require a lot of... things. It gets to the point where I think to myself, "Forget this. I need to focus and all this is doing is weighing me down." I, too, think less is more. It's about your state of mind, your hard work, dedication, and focus. Too much emphasis on a bunch of things could encourage mental laziness, an attitude that one can buy one's way into spiritual fulfillment by purchasing all the right things.

It wouldn't of been that difficult to get herbs etc in the past because they could of gone to the apothecary's shop (unless they were poor) or just picked them wild, I know what you mean though, sometimes I just want to do a quick spell, I don't have the time to hunt down the ingredients.

Now thats not to say that u shouldn't use the wisdom of those that have come before you, it doesn't mean not to follow certain spells to the "T" so to speak. It just means if a spell calls for 12 blue candles and u feel that 4 green canldes would better suit your needs then u will probably have an easier time using the 4 green.
1st of all different colors and objects create different feelings in different people. for instance ( i'm just making stuff up here for example purposes, i can't really think of a spell that would call for this ) say u were supposed to have a lock of hair from a cat for a spell, now lets say u were deathly afraid of cats and fear was not supposed to be at all eminated in the workings well it might be better for u to get a lock of hair from something else. In another example green represents a calm and giggly feeling to me, makes me think of nature and living creatures, however green might remind u of a time when you were say in a hospital staring at green walls, so may want to trade them out for another color that represents a lighter feeling to u.

Thats just my 2 cents, but at as it was stated in earlier posts there are certain types of magic that require you to follow ritual to the T.

I am guessing at this so someone correct me if i'm wrong, but i'm also under the impression that alot of rituals that require large amounts of ingrediants ( lots and lots of candles, large amounts of specific herbs and such ) were perhaps done that way originally because they were done in groups and perhaps needed enough of these tiems for multiple people to be able to focus on/ partake in ?

Folk magic is for me. Simple to the point be done.
High Ritual Magic is more then I can handle! Energy is lost just getting prep
for such work. I'm sure it's perfect some people like setting a formal dinning table for a formal dinner. I'd rather just have eat in front of the TV

Phorum Ghost I found your comment to reflect my feelings as well. You get so focused on what to get and need aah the heck with this. Some spells I read and just move on if it requires to much or the wording puts me off.

Sobek it is an art! And some people like entertaining and all that fancy stuff. So your also correct.

I don't know but it just seems to work for me the simpler the spell and the fewer items need to accomplish the goal works for me best. The spell that most people would say Oh that can work. There's nothing there 3 things thats all!

When it calls for so many things I feel like it's something that must be followed to the T and to tell the truth they left you no room to add anything extra. When it has few Ingredients I am more inclined to add a pinch of this and a pinch of that from my heart and instinct.

Well, these are more like the old traditions (lets not call them superstitions, please) from my country. I'll add some examples here:

1-To make someone leave your house, put a broomstick behind the front door.
2-To protect yourself against evil spirits, sprinkle salt over your shoulders.
3-To prevent someone from getting married, swipe their feet with a broom.
4-Also to make someone leave, put some salt under their chair.
5-If you do not wish for something just said to happen, knock on wood.
6-To travel a lot during the next year, in new year's eve walk around the block carrying a luggage case.
7-To stop the rain from falling, nail a nail on a tree.
8-To make someone loose money, leave their toilet lid up!
9-To have money during the year, carry a --Santa Lucía flower-- in your wallet or purse.
10-It is common tought that if a broomstick falls to the floor it means someone is just about to arrive to your home so, if you do not wish that person to come, you have to pick the broom up and put it across the front door. They will just continue on and not stop by.

well, its not by any means old, one of my own creation accually (to my knowledge anyway). But to keep away evil spirits and unwanted energies, wave your have back and forth over a burning candle untill your hand is black with soot. Then press your hand above your doorway making a black print of your hand. Afterward, preferably with a sterile lancet if possible, prick your finger and press the bleeding finger in the center of your palm (on the print, not your accual hand).

in short, light candle, wave hand, slap the wall, mark with blood, there ya go. I've done this to my room and it seems to work very well. I suppose if you don't want to cut yourself you could use saliva or some other form of bodily fluid, but I personally prefer blood.

Depends on who you talk to, and what constitutes as "harm". A simple cut on the arm, which in this day and age, we can heal pretty effectively, may not fall under the category of harm. Is it harm if it just hurts a little bit, and doesn't cause you any more concern? On the other hand, if you have an immune deficiency, then a cut or a puncture to the skin would be a big deal. It's a matter of perspective.

Also consider that not all magic falls under the precepts of wicca. In fact, most prechristian magick fell into the "Give the Gods something they want, and they will reward you" sort of magick. IT was a way of showing your gratitude in a concrete way. Also showing that you are putting your money literally where your mouth is.
