This is where I say slow don't and get some experience behind your belt before you start with spells. Learn to meditate, sense and manipulate energy, read some good books and explore what your path is really about. Without learning the basics, your spells are far more likely to fail or cause problems. Besides, spells are just icing on the cake.
As for truth spells... what kind of truth spell were you thinking of? Something to make you more perceptive? To help you discern the truth more easily? Or something to make someone tell the truth? The first two options are fine but the last walks all over a person's free will. Forcing someone to do something is not on. Indeed, using magick like that can be seen as a form of slavery. A good rule of thumb is to never do something by magick that you wouldn't do by mundane means.
Before you cast a spell think about what it is you want to do and what the consequences are. If they are consequences you can accept, then start working out the who, what, when, where and why of the spell.
Who- This refers to the spell's target. Some spells have a general or specific target. It often depends on the type of spell.
What- This is the effect of the spell. Essentially, it's what you want to happen as a result of the spell. Think hard, be specific and always keep in mind the worst case scenario.
When- The time frame of a spell is very important. Is the spell going to have a time limit? Will you have an 'off switch' should something go wrong?
Where- Some spells should only affect certain areas. Others are triggered by the presence of an item.
Why- This is perhaps the most important thing to consider. Just why do you want to cast a spell? Sometimes it is better to do something by mundane methods. Indeed, often it is a lot less exhausting!
Great power does mean great responsibility. Above all, *think* about what you want to do. Just because it sounds interesting or cool, doesn't mean it's a good idea. Be self-aware and be certain that you don't cast anything that you can't uncast.
