Triple goddess Hecate?
Triple goddess Hecate?
Ok so IV been trying to do my research but the sources are a bit confusing with some saying she isn't a triple goddess, some saying she is but the other forms being a variety of different gods including Persephone/Kone and Demeter. Does anyone have any idea or other sources which could clear this up for me?
Re: Triple goddess Hecate?
To add to this a friend who is very into Hecate says that she's is a triple faced goddess as she is a god of the crossroads but not a triple goddess.

Re: Triple goddess Hecate?
I don't work with pantheons or Aspecting, but at one time i had researched this great goddess. I'm thinking this is the right idea. Hecate is not a maid-mother-crone triple goddess, & isn't a moon goddess. She is a Titan which is one of the oldest deities pre-dating Egyptian, Greek & Roman pantheons & dating to man's oldest concepts of gods. As Goddess of the three-way cross road she traverses all realms, which signifies over seeing life & death. She sometimes mistakenly is referred to as a crone, which she is not. As torch bearer she was way-shower to Kore/Persephone through the underworld. The black dog is a similar symbol, a bit like Egyptian Anubis. As key bearer she both locks & unlocks all doors signifying over seeing safe passage between life and death & she thus oversees childbirth & holds the midwives knife. The umbilical cord is cut when we are born & at death the silver cord holding us to our physical form is cut. Life & death. She's associated with magic because of this "passage between" function where reality seems in-side-out & reversed so sometimes holds a mirror. The snake she holds is another underworld indicator but also a symbol of moving telluric, hidden earth-energies (as in shamanisticly), & includes divination which is another underworld feature, like seeing 3-ways. The deepest mysteries are her domain. That's about all I can remember. To add to this a friend who is very into Hecate says that she's is a triple faced goddess as she is a god of the crossroads but not a triple goddess.

And Kore/Persephone is a metaphor for life cycles of the Earth, return of spring & renewal, etc. So she showed Kore thru the depths, representing guiding the life force of the earth thru underground renewal.
Re: Triple goddess Hecate?
I haven't heard of the silver cord of life before that's interesting

The silver cord connects the vital body, (also called energy body) that we spirit-travel in, to our physical body in the present space-time. I've seen my own &'other persons' cords when traveling OOB. The belief crosses over to other concepts but the cord of life/death & the threads of life are fairly common symbols of fate that aren't so deeply associated with Hecate
There are themes that cross between deity images. The triple goddess moon deity images also have a feature of weaving the cords of life & death, & the 3 Norns is one example; moon spinners make the threads of Fate. And fate isn't far removed from life & death features, but is a separate level.
Images of Hecate holding a distaff of threads would be relaying that cross over concept but I think I've only ever seen one such image.

Re: Triple goddess Hecate?
Historically she is a triple goddess but not *THE* triple goddess. (As in "maiden-mother-crone") She is not a crone in Greek myth, however I have upg that she takes on this modern form.
She rules over the sea, sky, and earth. And the underworld. In Chaldean lore she is a goddess universal. She is connected to the moon in Roman myths later. She tends to form triads with Artemis and Selene. Sometimes Persephone replaces Artemis I think it was. The triads differ at times. She was associated with the dark moon in Greece.
The Chaldean oracles subscribe much more power to her. If you want I can give you some excerpts. She is my matron goddess.

I am the Earth, The Sun and the Stars
And I am the also the Moon
I am all animal and birds,
And I am the outcast as well, and the thief
I am the low person of dreadful deeds,
And the great person of excellent deeds
I am Female. I am Male and I am Neuter. - Devi
