Cauldron Sand...Would Local Sand Be OK?

Postby MsMollimizz » Tue Nov 03, 2015 6:49 pm

I would think I would know this...!
Okay, I've seen packaged sand for the cauldron
to prevent cracking. Can't I just get some sand
from this sandy desert I live in or is it too likely
not to disperse the heat well enough ?
Maybe I had the answer to this some time ago,
either way I seem to have forgotten it !
Thanks for your answers, I guess my brain is
giving me the silent treatment today !

I'm like you....I think "home sand" is fine.....I have used salt as well to place charcoal on. Picking sand from your favourite place might be a powerful intentional choice. Anybody else?

I think sand that you've gathered yourself would be a nice touch.

Thanks for your replies Gentle People !
I wonder how many of us feel the same way ?
Anyone else want to chime in ?
I just can't see paying for "cauldron sand"
when I live in a desert full of sand !

Yeah that's pretty crazy, but I guess people will try to sell us anything. ;)

We have many water ways in our area. I think the sand on banks adjacent to active rivers has an incredible energy to it, a nice "charge." This sand feels both cleansing and energizing to me, and seems to have a "wisdom" to it, something ancient and grounding. I keep a good amount on hand, and use it for a number of things, including heat/fire related projects, spell work, you name it.

And it adds a nice energy to an altar just by itself, without "using" it for any particular thing. It feels alive to me, like an old friend. If you hold your hand over it, you can feel the kinetic action of the water that transported it. And you could feel the energy of the sun that irradiated it, as it may have been exposed to sunshine for many milennia (mind boggling to think about). I love river sand; I love the planet, my Mother.

As long as you have something that will help to spread the heat out, and not allow one spot to become a lot hotter than the rest, you and your cauldron should be OK. From a RITUAL standpoint, I like the idea of self-gathered local sand, the river sand in paticular! :D

I think I will gather some sand from Medano Creek when we go to the Sand Dunes next year. I know I'm not supposed to, but it's for a good cause.

Salt is actually my go-to for burning charcoal, just because I always have lots of it around. But I've also used things like coarse cornmeal, and even rice. Certainly nothing wrong with gathering your own sand.

I actually got my recent batch on eBay. It's SO hard to find rice ash.

Thanks, and what made you choose to use rice ash for this purpose, like is there a spiritual significance of some sort, or is it just convenient to use (or both? lol)?

And is the ash you used produced from the rice stalks once the rice grains are removed from them?... just wondering because if so, there's a good chance I could gather some myself, maybe for free, because every year they do "rice burning" in an agricultural area near where I live. I believe they're burning the stalks once the rice has been harvested off of them.

Thanks.

I know this is an older post but how did you get on? I always used hearth ah for my charcoal but I love the idea of using sand from the beach near me, to gather it and use it with intent sounds brilliant!

For whom is your question, Rainsprite?

Thanks.
