Crows; can they be a good sign?

Postby butterfly » Tue Aug 18, 2015 6:43 pm

Hello everyone!
Yesterday on my bike ride, a crow flew right above me and landed on a light post in front of me. It started crowing loudly.
I've heard this can be an omen but was hoping it might actually be a good sign.
Can someone tell me if there are any positive connotations with seeing a crow? :D

What do you think it means? Almost anything can have both a good and a bad aspect. Think about the context of seeing the crow.

Butterfly,
Crows ? I don't know if there are some in other countries...
Are you in US ? Just being nosey !
Landing on your porch, cool ! I'd be honored !
My first thought was the Crow was hungry and is asking
you for a "hand-out" ! Most people would rather chase
them away instead of realizing the good they do. I know
Ravens clean-up the carrion, and what ever they can find.
I believe we need to do all we can for the remaining
wildlife..."man" don't care anymore so it's up to us !
I lived in a trailer park about 10yrs ago, there was a
"resident" Raven, he had a broken wing that hung...
When I saw him, I'd watch him for awhile to see if any
one else fed him, no...
I use to buy skinless chicken breast, get it home and
I'd cut the fatty tissue off and freeze them separately
for him. Empty trailer next door so when I saw him
I'd set out the frozen pieces and fill the water bowl.
He would pick up chicken and carry it off somewhere
out of sight. Made my heart feel good...
Ravens mate for life, I saw his mate come in now and
then. I'm not sure what happened after we moved but
I never forgot. I try to help the animals every chance
I get.
Please let me know if the crow comes back ? Are you
in a place where you can have a bird bath for them
to drink water ? Or feed ?

A visit from any bird is a good omen to me. Especially Bluejays which are in the Crow family. Crows are beautiful birds that people find pesky. They are very intelligent. I wouldn't think anything bad of a visit from such a smart bird.

I personally have always felt strongly drawn to crows, and whenever I see them I take heart and usually interpret it as a good omen.

Ultimately, symbolism is entirely personal. If you feel that crows (or ravens, these birds are often considered synonymous) enforce a positive sign, then that ends the discussion; they're positive for you.

All told, however, crows are a generally good omen. As far as their Native American association as a spirit animal goes, they're directly tied into magic and a sign of good luck. Seeing it can be treated as a warning that something isn't quite as it appears to be, while it's also linked to "spiritual sight" which could include the likes of clairvoyance.

I think crows are generally considered bad luck because of their association with the dead. Being survivors, crows have happily landed and ate at battlegrounds where the dead lie ready to be picked at. That a group of them is called a "murder" hardly helps! Personally, I think they're remarkable birds - and ravens even more so. One of my favourite superstitions is the one involving them and the Tower of London. Essentially, the belief is that should the ravens ever fly away from the Tower, the monarchy will fall. As such, a great deal of time and expense is put into keeping them happy.

It's just a great wee tale.

Thank you all for your responses, firstly!
I have only seen the crow about halfway down my bikeride home from work. I will definitely keep an eye out for the beautiful bird and see if there is some way he/she needs my help! Your story is wonderful by the way, thank you :)

I think you are absolutely right about the symbolism being personal. The only reason I was actually concerned was because the mythology on the internet was entirely intimidating! :anxious: Thanks for your response!

That's completely understandable. The mythology is complex and filled with some shadow. Imperious gave you some good examples of why members of the corvid family are revered and looked on as vibrant survivors, opportunists and animal allies that are intelligent and considered to have a little bit of the shadow in them. Where I come form the Raven is the central trickster archetype. Raven is magic and a shapeshifter...a trickster. He can turn into another animal or even an object. In the mythology Raven loved good food, women, and being a bit of a naughty brat.....but he isn't all bad... Good things happen when we are curious enough to explore. Is Raven or crow energy completely straightforward and akin to the sweetness of hummingbird energy? Certainly no, but he is not all bad.

It is personal, and Raven reminds me to allow myself to be curious, to adventure, to be slightly messy and embrace the shadow. I have two Ravens being blown around in the sky...slightly ruffled and messy tattooed on my arm to remind me of that fact.

Raven has appeared to me when I'm doing big things and starting new journeys....Raven has also appeared when I'm getting too stuffy and need to remember to laugh.

There's an awesome old story that cracks me up about Raven and Eagle (his "proper cousin") sitting at a fire in the forest one night eating their catch from the ocean. Raven had caught a red cod (good, but not that fatty and yummy) and eagle had caught himself a nice big fat black cod. Eagle was sitting at the fire all dignified and tucking into his black cod and Raven was just staring at him...coveting Eagle's cod....so Raven tellers his cousin this story that black cod tastes so much better when you rub it on a stump....."it brings out the oils and really takes your cod to a whole new level" he says...well Eagle just kind of snorts at Raven and keeps tucking in....Raven on the otherhand just slinks away from the fire...probably saying he has use the washroom or whatever....and while out of Eagles sight he turns himself into a stump.....well he kind of waddles back to the fire and Eagle and coughs to get his attention. Eagle looks at this stump and at his shining black cod and for a moment considers what his cousin the Raven had said.....then Eagle looks down and sees that this stump has two suspicious black bird feet. Well eagle takes a big burning chunk of wood from the fire and throws it on "the stump". Sure enough the stump shrieks and kind of shuffles off....well a little while later a slightly singed Raven returns to the fire and resumes eating his red cod.

I love Raven for these and other stories. He is known for bringing light to the world as well because he was a greedy brat.

So my question to you Butterfly, is what did you feel when you saw the crow? What came to your mind and your consciousness as you looked at this being looking at you?

In indigenous community the bird is a representative of a message. The bird clan is a messenger clan ( at least to the tsalagi ). And all birds mean something different. ... Crows are messengers of death , but they are ALSO. Messengers to let you know you're guides are with you. .. They even become sort of a guardian at times. They ALWAYS show when you need to take a look at your surroundings or express to you to remember how you feel at that moment. .. Or something that has just happened or is coming shortly afterward. They are time markers. Think of it as a sticky note ... And think.

Omens usually come with an attached meaning to help interpret them. For example, at one point in my life I was struggling to decide if I should keep my job. I had a dream that I was at work, digging a well, out of which came a fountain of crude-oil! This day and age, miners call crude-oil 'black gold'. It was within a week that I got a raise and a nice bonus.

Just seeing a crow do something out of the ordinary once doesn't necessarily count as an omen. But if in the same day or week you see more crows, crowing loudly, I'd say there is a good chance they are trying to get your attention about something.

My friend is "connected" with crows. They practically flock to him and the expression in their caws changes to match his mood. If he sits down at the base of a tree, the crows land on the tree. Symbolism is based of context to me. The attributes of the situation determine the meaning of the omen. S.J. Tucker wrote a song in which she honored crows from the point of view of the trickster, mentioning that even though they aren't as beautiful sounding as other birds, crow still sings. Omens we see in everyday are much like tarot. You interpret it based off off what you feel constitutes the situation. If you do a one card reading asking, "What will happen to me after I get out of the hospital" You would might be happy, this would be showing that you will gain skill and power. But, had you asked "What about Bob, makes my wife have an affair with him, what has he got that i don't?" and pulled the magician, you would be rather disheartened. Each and every single thing we see is a puzzle piece. Not always ours, but always someones. The wind blows the trees and its spooks the pigeon who flies and shits on the man's car. The man curses at the pigeon and shoos at it. A pretty girl giggles and offers a gentle hand to pigeon. A romance is ignited. All things in the story were puzzles pieces. Yet only two are meant for each other. Now, to the couple, a pigeon represents love. Because thats the context of their lives.
O Goddes, all praise to you. Ta em hotep, anekh hrak. Lady Isis, I adore you. Nebet aset, tu a atu.
