Question about a talisman

Searching the forums is good advice. To help you narrow down the practice though, there are a few ways to go about protecting yourself from negative energy and evil spirits.

The first is the repetition of prayer to strengthen your aura. When you surround yourself with Light and Love, it creates a sacred space. Negative energy will have a harder time attaching itself to your Positive energy (based on the metaphysical law: Like attracts Like). Also, 'evil spirits' wont be able to survive for long in the environment -- like a fish out of water -- and usually tend to stay clear. This is why smudging and purification rituals work so well, because they change the immediate environment.

The proper way to do this is to recite a prayer that invokes the idea (in your mind) that you are absolutely protected by the Divine. For example, Christians like to use Psalms 23 [. . .]yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I fear no evil, for thou art with me; thy rod and thy staff are comforting[. . .]

The second way of going about it is to charge an item with the repetition of prayers to protect you, or by casting a spell onto the particular item. This time, however, the energy will be adapted to the material you use as a charm. Silver and Gold are especially good for protection (as well as other things). Silver reflects and Gold burns away (like the Moon and the Sun). I've read that negative entities can't stand Silver.

The best things to use as magical charms for protection are gemstones that have been gifted to you. Any gift is a symbolic expression of Love, and Love is the most potent magick around

There are other ways to go about it as well, but usually aren't recommended for beginners.

Amethyst is a good stone for protection. As corvidus said, something that has been gifted to you is a good place to start. You might try taking a nature walk too, and see if anything "calls" to you. It could be a stone, shell, plant life. You might also want to research local traditions. Most places have indigenous spiritual practices. Starting with something familiar is easier.
