Sun Symbols?

Postby Falcon_Heart27 » Sat Dec 06, 2014 11:37 pm

Hello!

I picked up a yellow pillar candle today (for Yule), and I want to carve some symbols in it to represent the sun, rebirth, etc...
But I don't know where to start. What symbols would you recommend? Are there different sets of symbols for different paths? (Also, on a side note, I heard something about sigils, what are those?)

Thanks in advance for the help. :)

The astronomical symbol for the sun is a circle with a dot in the middle. A circle with lines coming off from it to represent sun rays is also a commonly used sun symbol... sometimes the rays are a bit ornate, and sometimes they're just simple lines. (You might consider eight lines equally spaced around the circle to represent the eight solar holidays, depending on your personal path.) Or you could draw a sun coming over the horizon to represent rebirth of the sun. A similar symbol I've seen is a sun rising out from a cauldron. Some animals are also associated with rebirth, the snake comes to mind for me, but different people hold different associations with animals, so depends on which animal makes sense to you.

Different paths can have different symbols for these things... for example, an Egyptian pagan might like to use the Akhet symbol, which is a symbol for sunset and sunrise, so has the death and rebirth elements to it. Or a stylized sun disc with an ankh (life) and/or shen (eternity). On the other hand a Norse pagan might choose to use runes. Really just depends on what has meaning to you... if you don't follow a specific tradition sometimes it's best to go with more general images and symbols, whatever you think will work best for you.

Personally I find a symbol that instantly says 'sun' to you is what you need :) even if that is a circle with wiggly lines coming out of it.

Sigil magic is a powerful kind of magic whereby you create a symbol from letters of your intention. Basically you write down very specifically what it is you want then you cross out any repeated letters. Then you create a symbol from the letters you have left, but in a way that they form together and blend losing their letter form. You'll end up with a design that is unreadable but you'll instantly know what it means from looking at it.

I'm trying to picture this in my head, but keeps coming up blank !
Can you elaborate or share a pic ? You've got me curious, now !

I like sigil magick - it's simple enough and can be incorporated in any and every tradition and ritual. This is a thread that explains it better.
