Salt Dough Rune Set
Salt Dough Rune Set
This was the first time I ever used salt dough, but I'm pretty proud of myself! To get the shape I wanted, I rolled the dough and then took the top of a rounded cork and gently pressed it down on the ball repeatedly in a circular pattern until they looked like disks. They turned out a little bigger than I expected. Now I just have to wait for them to air dry. Gah, I'm so excited to start using them!!

Oh my goodness, Heartsong! They are beautiful! Are you planning on painting them at all?
Re: Salt Dough Rune Set
Thank you, Xiao! Yep, I'm planning on painting the rune symbols silver, and the rest of the pieces a dark blue. When I get that done, I'll post the results.

Re: Salt Dough Rune Set
I kinda like 'em just plain
When Xiao posted her version of the salt dough runes, I made some right away. I made 2 sets. One painted with oils and the other with acrylics. I found the paint didn't adhere well to either. They seemed to form tiny cracks where the white dough could be seen. The acrylic came out better then the oil and I thought it would be the other way around.
another thing I was thinking of is mixing some color into the wet dough...a brown perhaps, then just paint the symbols.
Good job girl!

Re: Salt Dough Rune Set
Thanks, Firebird! I'd mixed in blue food coloring into the dough, but it didn't turn out very dark (they kinds look grey). After reading your experience with paint, I may just paint the rune carvings, though.

Re: Salt Dough Rune Set
I'm thinking something a little stronger than food coloring...more like mortar colorant, or stain?
oooO, can we make em come out looking like old rocks or wood?
Now I can't even find the one's I made...eh, I know...hold on a sec.........................here they are
In looking at them now I'm also wondering if I shouldn't have put a sealer over them. The salt seems to want to get out, making some of them a little opaque.

Re: Salt Dough Rune Set
Hmm, I think I might try staining them and see what happens. I have a huge dough ball left in the fridge, so I can make more if need be.
And you know what? I bet I can make 'em look like river stones. That'd be wicked!
I'll post my results when I get a chance. Thanks for the idea, Firebird!

Re: Salt Dough Rune Set
Those turned out well, Heartsong.
I made my own set a couple years ago and I didn't carved into them or paint the runes onto them yet, so mine kind of look like vanilla wafers instead.
I can't wait to see how you paint them!

And here they are! I still have to seal them, and they need just a little more touching up, but I'm pleased with how they look!
