I am working on doing a spell to break a persons mental control over me. While coming up with the spell I thought of burning a picture of the person, but was worried that might be too negative. I was wondering what all of you thought. Would burning a persons picture inadvertently cause them harm? Any thoughts would be great, Thanks!

It really depends upon the intent with which you burn it, as well as how you word and visualize everything. My recommendation is that instead of burning a picture of them use a piece of thread/ribbon and cut it. Use something to represent yourself and something to represent them, it doesn't need to be a picture, it could be any object really but make sure the object used for this other person is something you have no problem getting rid of. Tie the ribbon/thread between the two objects, say whatever words feel appropriate, and then cut it. As you cut this cord imagine the link between you being severed and disappearing. It's always a good idea to imagine the place where it is/was attached to you healing, because if you don't heal the spot you can leave yourself open to this person (or someone/something else) attaching itself to that area. Once you're done wrap the end of the cord attached to "them" around the object and bury it somewhere outside, then take the object representing you and remove the cord to burn it/bury it/flush it/whatever you deem appropriate. Try to put some healing energy into your object and put it somewhere safe with a bit of protection until you feel like it's ok to take it down. If you want to throw this object away make sure you disassociate yourself from it, since it's something you used to personify yourself. It may be a good idea to keep it around in case you find yourself needing a representation in another spell down the road.

I know I mentioned this in an exercise I posted under Healing and Energy Work, but I'll mention it here again. If you know the elemental affiliation of the person, it's best to use the opposing element when getting rid of something of theirs or that you've used to represent them. For instance, if someone is a fire element, use water or earth. Earth is always a good grounder, but if you're against someone with earth leanings I'd use something else. Sometimes using their element, even if it's yours too, can work against you.

Keep in mind the way you word things and how you visualize it, and I'd add in "an it harm none" to the closing. Hope this helps and good luck! I know how hard it is to break someone's control over you. Don't forget to ask your guides for assistance, they may be able to give you some insight on other things you can do.

First of all, why you think that person has mind control over you? I mean its just that they are very convincing? or you think they casted a spell? either way to be honest, all you have to do is protective spells or shielding yourself, or even more simply do not endorse in everything they want yo to, just be strong and stand by your opinions!

I wouldn't say mind control is the best way to interpret what Shinitenshi is saying. I've been around some very good manipulators and I know from experience once they get their claws in you it can be very difficult to get away, to even realize what they're doing. You don't have to be weak-willed to be taken advantage of, just a few moments of not paying attention or them being very convincing in making you think you can trust them. It can really mess with your head and it usually takes someone outside of the situation that you trust more than them to help you realize what's going on. The most common examples of this can be found in abusive relationships where the victim is unable to leave despite what's going on. Subliminal messaging, thought embedding, the human mind is very susceptible to gentle suggestion and prodding.

Shinitneshi, you've already made the first step in getting free because you've realized, at least in part, what's going on. I agree with Greek_Male_Witch that you need to do protective spells and shielding, that should help, but if you put into your mind that their hold has been broken (this is where visualization comes in handy), then that will give you more strength and keep you from being further manipulated.

I know it might sound corny, but that line from Labyrinth, "you have no power over me", really is helpful when you feel like people are trying to control you. Use that as part of your protection spells and shielding, as well as if you still choose to do your original spell. It's a declaration of self-control and personal power that reminds you that you are in control of your life and your decisions, you need only step up and take back what's already yours.

Thanks for the suggestions, they sound like they would work well.

A little background...This person is my ex-husband and father of my three children. We have both since remarried and he is divorcing and remarrying again. What I meant by him having mental control over me is that I still worry about him thinking I am a bad mother. I shouldn't care what he thinks, and it annoys me that he can still affect me like this. I can't seem to get his negativity out of my head and it's driving me nuts. I know it doesn't matter what he thinks of me, but I can't stand the idea of someone thinking I'm a bad mother. I believe it's probably from all the mental abuse I suffered during the relationship, so I am trying to find a way to get rid of all his negativity so things that he says don't affect me and so I can communicate with him about the kids without worrying if he's going to be a jerk.

I agree with Fallen Moon; if your intent is not to cause this person harm, burn the picture, by all means. It is symbolic of releasing the grasp he has on you mentally.
