Sorry to disagree with everyone, but I think that it may be a hawk feather..A barred owl feather is also a possibility....check out these feathers and compare, see which one matches the best.

I think it matches the Barred Owl Feather the best.
It is a dark rich coloration of stripes, Thick stripes, a solid black tip.
The only problem with the Red-shouldered Hawk is that they are lighter and have more stripes (thinner).

I'd say it would be solved if you can take a picture Twine, and don't put it against a white background, maybe take a picture in some grass?

yes, when you bring up the stripes and compare them, it is surely a barred owl feather.

It looks similar to both.
But it's almost identical to this feather of the barred owl.
The hawk feather seems too small, or at least for the shape of this feather.
Not to say it's one or the other, it could be something completely different.

My issue with it being a barred owl feather might have to do with shape, but that depends on where exactly the feather was located on the wing.

It does look very similar to those.

It is very hard to tell. I will ask my grandfather, he may know. He knows quite a bit about birds, so perhaps he will have the answer.

I think it might be from the Hawk I posted.
The Barred Owl feathers have a tan streak close to the center and off to one side.
Yours is very distinctly dark and light.
Have you asked him about it yet?

I did and he thinks it's the owl.
He had me pull up a picture of both and the hawk only has 4 dark bands.
The owl has 6 and that matches my feather.
I'm still leaning towards the owl, personally, but I'm no expert.
