Coven or Solitary?

Postby Sallydreams » Sun Jan 10, 2010 11:25 am

I'm a Solitary witch and being in a Coven frightens me... but I doooo want to learn more and I realize that being by myself will only take me but so far.

All of the "Wiccan outreach" I find in my area are Coven's and they are training you to be a high priestess. I've thought about doing the training just for the knowledge... but I have no intentions of ever having a Coven.

It would be nice to have a friend or two in the Craft that I could meet up with during holidays and full moons though... or just to have a Rune/Tarot lesson here or there... but the Covens nearby are charging out the butt for knowledge!

It really bothers me.

I was just wondering what other people's views on it are... and if anyone lives in the East Coast, NC area... if you'd want to meet up and share Witchy info?

I'm also very wary of covens. I work with a group of people we get together regularly for Moons and Sabbats and sometimes just to share things, or even have fun. We do not define ourselves as a coven though. There is no real hierarchy, we take turns planning and writing the rituals and refer to ourselves as a circle. We're sort of family. I hope you someday find something like this, that you feel comfortable with and doesn't cost you anything in terms of money.

Yes! That would be awesome! I am jealous of your network of Wiccan friends.

I'm hoping when I move more Western NC I will find more people to bounce ideas/spells/rituals off of.

I'm glad I'm not the only one nervous about Covens.

I don't define myself as Wiccan although I admit to practicing something pretty close. Our group is eclectic Pagan. Maybe someday we'll create a tradition and name it, but for now eclectic Pagan works well.

Blessed Be,
I thought of the quote below when I read this.

I also think Covens go against my whole, "I'm not going to be ruled by anyone, this is MY religion" stance... And all the books I've read about them are "If you are interested in learning about Wicca and the rituals, join a coven a few times to experience how they do it, but don't stick around for too long if you aren't interested in going by their rules."

And I read a book written by a High Priestess once and it made me so angry I couldn't finish it... I actually think I hid it somewhere, bound. She had so much anger and was so close-minded about Witchcraft it was making me to fumble in my studies.

It's good that you had a good experience with one. I really like solitary life too. Everything is at my own pace and I feel more connected.
