This is probably one of the most helpful threads here for me, as someone who's interested in contacting spirits of my passed loved ones.
One question though. How are you to know if they want to contact you? I'd rather know for sure before intruding on them and trying to talk to them.

One thing that comes to mind, if you want to ask beforehand, is to send out the request that you wish to talk to them, then have them either give you a sign or contact you in your dreams to see if they do wish to speak to you. (: This can also help show when is the right time to talk to them too. They can be busy on the other side, just like we can be here! Hopefully this helps a little bit?

Something that I've noticed about spirit attachments is that it-takes-2. The host and the spirit mutually attach & usually through emotions of sympathy on the host's part & comfort-seeking on the spirit's part. Being aware of our emotions & grounding their energy discourages attachment. We can be empathic without being weighted down by sympathy.
