Not familiar with Portuguese witchcraft myself, but since this is an international board perhaps someone who is might provide a response.
As far as my initial thoughts on the pins in the picture part, from everything I've been exposed to, the first thing that came to my mind was an attempted curse of some sort, not a binding spell. A binding spell is more like preventing someone from doing something to someone else, not for keeping other people tied to some material object. Also, I don't think your grandfather would put pins in his own picture because pinning a picture is a form of punishment. My thought is someone else did that part. For instance, I'll use an example: if grandpa had been unfaithful to grandma, grandma may have gotten pissed off and "fixed" him for it (and pins in the picture may have only been
part of that working, lol).
The New England area, really the whole eastern part of the U.S., has some of the oldest properties in the country.
A lot of people have died in those homes. Dying in a hospital is a 20th century thing. Prior to that most people died in the comfort of their own homes. So, older properties had a lot of deaths and births (hospital births were also a 20th century phenomena, prior to that most people were born in the same house in which they later grew up). I have a hard time recommending a remedy for "house problems" on a message board without personally talking to someone because it can be so complicated, especially in older homes with a lot of history in them. There are just too many dynamics. I'm not surprised your house is super haunted.
Sometimes clearing unseen energetic cords between oneself and a material thing helps us break the ties that bind us to it. I had to have such a ceremony once to release myself from a car that wouldn't sell, and two days later I sold it. Same thing happened with a friend of mine trying to sell her house. Perhaps in the case of your family's house you all need to get together and say some kind of prayer that helps you cut ties with it before it will release you. Maybe you could help your family make peace with the spirits at the home by doing a little ceremony like lighting a candle, thanking your ancestors, and explaining to them that you must sell the house now. It's kind of like ending a relationship; you don't want to hurt anyone's feelings, just leave gracefully. Some house-clearing information was shared on the following thread, see if anything is helpful to you:

Hope something of all this is helpful. Anyone else have any thoughts on this? Do share...
