Runes
Runes
I've been thinking about getting a set of runes, but I don't know much about them. I can't make them myself (no fine motor skills), but I've seen them sold in a multitude of place. Could any more experienced rune-caster give me some advice?
Come, heart, where hill is heaped upon hill:
For there the mystical brotherhood
Of sun and moon and hollow and wood
And river and stream work out their will.

Gabriel & AnuChild,
If you are interested in runes, perhaps check out
The Book of Runes : A Handbook for the Use of an Anceint Oracle: The Viking Runes with Stones: 10th Anniversary Edition (Hardcover) by Ralph Blum
It comes with a book, and a bag of runes and is an excellent way to learn this ancien art.
I've seen it on Amazon.com for a little as $16.00 but new it should be around $20.00
Hope this helps!

I have some runes but they're back in Australia...
I only use them occasionally, as they are very strong. I used to walk past and look at them in the shop and never bought them - one day I felt ready so I bought them. Still, I do prefer my cards
Ironically my mum loves runes and is always using them! But I had to buy her, her own deck of divination cards as I was leaving the country and she was jokingly upset "how am I going to do readings now"
Let us know if you find any good runes!

If you're serious about runes, then I strongly suggest that you buy some good books.
Sadly, finding good books on runes can be hard. There is a lot of crap out there. Ralph Blum is a perfect examle. For serious rune study, I would suggest Edred Thorsson and Freya Aswynn. Amazon should have both Freya and Thorsson. I do feel that I should say that although these two authors are perhaps the best available sources for runic studies, they aren't without their agendas and weak points. Read carefully and back your reading up with books and commentaries on the various Norse myth cycles.

Re: Reply
No offense, but that is one of the worst descriptions of working with runes that I have ever seen. Messing lightly with thurisaz is a great way to get pricked yourself. Besides, hasn't that webauthor heard of a bindrune?I use runes all the time..this is where i got my info from...bt mainly my friend taught me how to use them http://www.bewitchingways.com/runes/magick.htm

If you must rely only on a website for rune information then stick with sites hosted by the Heathen community. They're serious about their runes and tend to have some of the most reliable information. Most Wiccan or generic Pagan sites have some of the worst misinformation I've seen.
Makes me want to hang my head in shame!
Try the links below but always remember to read critically. Every site has an agenda and faults and it's up to you to winnow the grain from the chaff. Part of being a good witch is learning to apply your braincells and not believe everything you read/hear. If you don't actively assess information, you'll start believing the world is flat and that the sun revolves around the earth.

I can do one betterCould any more experienced rune-caster give me some advice?

If I may, I'll email you a self study course in runes. The course is meant for the elder futhark, but you can adjust things for other futharks as well.

Dear gods! No. Ralph Blum "channelled" his meaning of the runes, ignoring historical evidence in the process.Gabriel & AnuChild,

What's more, he's the reason why there is a blank rune in modern sets (something for which is no historical evidence) as his original rune sets are cheaply made and prone to breaking. So, being a nice guy, he included a spare., that people could inscribe the broken rune onto it. Someone then decided that there HAD to be mystical significance to it....
Frankly, Blum is one that I would suggest avoiding until such time as your looked at the anthropological evidence as well as reading the rune poems and the the Lore.
