Hi all,
I am very new to all this and don't want to make light of anything, so please excuse my ignorance or if this is a silly question. The guy I'm seeing used to be involved in witchcraft. I don't think he still is active in it, but he still carries over some of the beliefs. Ever since I've been with him, he's joked that I'm a witch. I don't practice Wicca or anything like it. I go to church once a week and meditate a bit, but beyond that don't think I'm particularly spiritual at all. I'm pretty sure he's just joking, so I'm not posting this about me, just in general because it made me think about it a bit.
It actually made me wonder a bit about two questions. First, how does one actually become a witch, and, for some people, is it a natural part of them? I know enough about the popular image of Wicca to know that people talk about hereditary lines. But, I'm not sure if this does something deeper or if it's just like coming from a long line of ranchers or lawyers. Second, can people actually tell if other people practice Wicca or if they are naturally attuned that way (if that's possible)? I don't really notice if people are Christian unless they have one of those fishes on their car or they start trying to "save me", but as I said above, I'm not particularly good at the spiritual stuff.
I'm sorry if these questions are a waste of time or out of line somehow. They're asked out of curiosity is all. I just thought I'd go to the source, if you know what I mean.
Take care.
Strange question about recognizing others
Re: Strange question about recognizing others
No offence can be taken as all of this is very innocent in origin and question. Anyone can become a witch, for being one isn't about blood lines or family ties it's about being true to yourself and recognising that there are other things in this world we can't explain with science. It's about being open minded even if you aren't spiritual or believe in anything other than the modern day beings. Witches can sometimes tell if someone else is like them but that's more a development of the ability to sense power, like ripples across the water's surface. It can still be very hard to tell as some witches look the same as all the other "muggles". It's just what you experience that gives you an idea of what someone is like or their belief

Re: Strange question about recognizing others
Witchy folk often use the word empathic or empathy to describe an intuitive awareness of another person's feelings & spiritual connection.
If you're on your contacts or plugged in to your extended awareness & all your sensors are functioning, then yes, you can spot another of similar type at 100 paces with the wind against you. This doesn't imply any particular level of spirituality, just radar. Like Ashrend said, a ripple across the water.
Alternately, you can sense a super-octane, highly spiritual person by the glow of their aura (think halo) or the peaceful emanations out-flowing from that person. Unconscious body language also transmits a lot of subliminal info that we are all attuned to from associating with other people of all kinds.
"How does one actually become a witch, and, for some people, is it a natural part of them?"
Let me use an example you're already familiar with - & ask "How does one become a Christian?" - you'll know that it is by receiving baptism from someone already infused with Holy Spirit. Can someone be Christian without receiving a baptismal transference of Holy Spirit? This kerfluffle perplexed the early church and they finally said Yes, it's called a natural baptism of the spirit.
It's similar with witches & called initiation received from someone already initiated. And of course the same conundrum occurs with a natural initiation, but witch's go one further and say self-dedication is acceptable - which is a heart felt pledge or oath to take on to one’s self the beliefs and practices ascribed to. This comes from the old practices.
Mideavil cathedrals &' much older temples in ancient times were designed to create & induce the receptive state based on the knowledge that one can summon the initiatory experience thru frequency vibration. It's a bit more than just deciding one day to act like a witch and quack like a witch & so-be-it a witch. By the time all the stage management takes place the initiate's psyche & body are keyed to "A" like a musician tuning his instrument. When s/he ”raises energy” and hums in resonance to the thrum of the Earth (ELF 7.83 hz) they can sustain it naturally because it is a natural frequency resonance. They feel it in their bones or say it runs in the bloodline when it's the crystalline forms within the blood and bone resonating to the Earth's frequency. To my understanding that produces a witchcraft initiatory experience and may even stir the pineal gland. And initiation doesn't always "take" if there's resistance.
What the initiate does with it thereafter depends on their interests and talents. A witch is a person who practices witchcraft, but just practicing witchcraft doesn't make a person a witch in the stricter sense and meaning of initiation resonance. But some how, somewhere the Sincere Seeker experiences awakening & knows it.
Wiccan Hereditary lines can be claimed through initiation by clergy of Such & Such coven that hived off from 2-generations further along from the Original founders of the line. Then there are Bohemian families heard of now & then descended from the oldest clans that migrate & marry specifically to preserve the bloodline & elite power structure since before the flood.

Re: Strange question about recognizing others
Thank you both for amazing answers. I appreciate them both.
I like that it's about being true to yourself. That's one of the issues I've been having lately with some of the more closed-off churches in my area. They get *very* conformist very fast. I think being true to oneself usually leads to good, not ill, and that trying to "fit in" can cause a lot of psychic pain.
I get the power/frequency thing a bit in my own way. When I get worn out by some people and I always describe it as them not "vibrating well with me" but I've never used it as much more than an expression, so I've never thought about it deeply. I can see how that can be something that would translate over to recognizing similar people or even to being on a particular frequency with nature and the world around them with some sort of practice. I can see how it would be subtle for most people in most instances and pretty open to interpretation. I'm not sure how auras work. Is it that different frequencies have different colors? So, some people see the color and others feel the hum?
Thanks for explaining the different initiations. I actually like that it can be done by oneself. I've never much held that we must use intermediaries to the Divine, though I understand why those intermediaries would exist as safeguards in some cases. It's interesting that certain spaces can facilitate this. As for practicing Wicca, but not being Wicca, yeah, there is the sense that you can go to church, but not be a Christian too. Some people just seem to carry more Spirit than others. I think this sometimes comes down to intention.
Thank you again for all your help regarding my understanding of all this. Sorry again for all my naivety.
(He's a nice guy, btw, so whatever he learned helped. We're having a bit of a time right now, but I'm trusting it'll all come around.)

Re: Strange question about recognizing others
Hmm. I can't say I know what makes us see auras. Dif colors as dif light frequencies within the energy-body makes sense. I've never associated seeing an aura with feeling the hum, but the hum is there in the background.
Examples: I'd seen black-rimmed flashes of red in a man's aura just before he'd experienced a ruptured ulcer; what looked like an inside out or black-hole aura around a coworker who later the same day had a sudden coronary & survived; & similar inverted aura around a priest who died later that day from aneurism. With his i also experienced a slow motion time freeze that nearly knocked me over pushing me away from him, which I took as do-not-interfere (happened with my dad too); saw blackened gray streaks around a nun who tried (failed) to suicide with an overdose; solid pure magenta around my cat when she's schmoozing affectionately & then it changed in an instant to flares of crimson when she'd hissed irritation at the other cat for taking her cushion, & the cushion-snitch's aura was a smug yellow; brilliant Emerald green around a man giving a talk & demonstration of Therapeutic Touch healing; Turquoise around the parish priest as he blessed the communion & silently wept in a cathartic moment; and so & so forth Etc, etc. Whoa. Too much information.
There's a lot of variety reflecting physical, emotional and spiritual status. My learning curve is very much a work in progress on this.
