Does every tool have to be consecrated?

Postby James122 » Thu May 11, 2017 4:41 am

First of all sorry if it seems as if I'm just turning up here very infrequently, I haven't been on this forum for a while because I've been very busy lately.

I would like to know if it is necessary to consecrate every magickal item including items like crystals and jewellery?
I know it's best advised to ritually consecrate items like an Athame or Chalice but would it not be enough if I just purified my crystals, jewellery and other smaller magickal items that I use much less frequently using methods such as smudging or putting them in water under the moonlight?

My question is basically is it a must that I need to formally consecrate every magickal item or is simple purification all that is needed?

This question has been nothing me for a long time because I keep wondering will the tool not be as effective if I don't consecrate it in some way so any response would be much appreciated.

From what iv experienced, and I'm relatively new to this as well, just consecrating things like your altar, wand, a thane etc is enough. I mostly just cleanse items with running water. Sometimes it's even good to not cleanse the item depending on what you are using it for such as random tree branches or dried flowers, you want their natural energies.

The world of humans is wreaking with negative emanations and discordant vibrations, most likely too many animals in the cage. I discharge all my tools and accoutrements when first acquired by burying them overnight. Also it is best to search for old implements instead of newly manufactured ones. Periodically I like to flood crystals in moonlight. Crystals should always be stored with a sprig of white sage. If rinsing with water I use spring water. Part of my every circle ritual is to consecrate any tools to be used by touching them on my earth stone, passing through sage or incense smoke, passing through the altar candle flame and touching them in the altar salted water bowl. Everyone has their own ideas on this but I figure it never hurts to overkill cleansing and consecrating every thing brought into sacred space.
My combination altar-storage chest is Sacred Space, nothing touches it without proper care and preparation.

Questions on practice guidelines probably depends on what you want from your practice. Do you want your tools reserved for special magical use & imbued with your magnetism?

Full Ritual consecration includes cleansing, blessing & magnetizing & might be reserved for the altar & ritual tools IMO but it's a personal decision depending on your preferences and personal style. Both of the prior comments by Ashrend and Shekinah sound sensible and realistic. Cleansing pre-handled items seems to be the main issue and preserving the sanctity of sacred space.

I've shopped at the thrift/op shops for candle holders, altar bowls & storage items, and for sure I'd physically wash away dust & fingerprints and also energetically cleanse them before I'd put them with my Gear. And I do the same with new, not previously owned items. Anything I wanted to use for a talisman would get the full treatment so that prior energies were nullified and I had a clean slate to re-program.
