Hello everyone!
As most know I'm still in my infancy with the Craft.
So I will be asking all you great wise ones simple but important questions as I grow.
Is it necessary to cast a circle before one casts a spell, or does this have to do with the intensity of the spell to be cast?

Re: Casting a Spell
Some people cast a circle. I visualize a protective area around myself. Whatever method you choose, some sort of protection is highly recommended when spell casting. I view it in the same vein as using personal protective equipment in my nursing duties. It's a wise habit. It creates a barrier between you and any nasties that might be lurking.

But thank you
Re: Casting a Spell
Are you desiring to cast a spell?
Or is this for future reference?
I think you'll find there are several different views on this. There are some witches who cast spells without circles or assistance form deities or elements or anything else for that matter.
If you are on a Wiccan path, you will likely be more comfortable doing spellwork from a protective space. So it kind of boils down to the path you are choosing.

To answer your question. Yes I think it is wise to cast some kind of circle or protective shield before spellwork. I used to do a full blown Wiccan style circle but now that I follow a more eclectic-traditional path I 'lay a compass round' instead. When I am in more of a rush though I will just ground and centre myself, visualize a protective bubble forming around myself and ask for protection from my spirit guides. I also invite the elements to join me too. To me a circle 'amplifies' the energy I raise for the spell and keeps me protected from any unwanted nasties.
I hope this helps. Circle casting is a pretty personal thing like Firebird said
