Religions of the World

Postby Bougainvillea » Mon Jul 11, 2011 11:11 am

I wasn't sure where to place this in the forum, but I decided "Types of Witchcraft" would be best. Let me start by just saying that I am agnostic with many different Pagan beliefs. I do believe there is a higher power, and I believe it is feminine (AKA, a Goddess).

But I am very interested in different religions. In March of this year (2011), I purchased a really nice journal. It's about 400 pages long, college ruled, and is plain black. It's a very nice journal. I began creating a Homemade Religion Textbook. I'm not creating it to sell or to publish. I'm creating it for myself and any friends or relatives that want to view it.

First, I began creating a Table of Contents. At first, this was a simple task. I came up with the obvious religions, like Christianity, Hinduism, Islam, Atheism, Agnosticism, Paganism, Taoism, Buddhism, Judaism, etc, etc. Then I really began looking into it, and found religions I hadn't heard of. Some of these were Zoroastrianism, Epicureanism, Jainism, Baha'i, Rastafarianism, Shaivism, Vaishnavism, and others. I could not believe there were so many religions! And not to mention their branches! In Paganism alone, there are tons of branches! In Christianity, there are even more!

Today, though, I discovered an even crazier list. There are really obscure religions: PL Kyodan, Ch'ondogyo, Roma, ANIMAL RIGHTS (this is actually a RELIGION, though most people would not classify it as such. They will usually put themselves under a different religion category), Sunni, Shi'ite (type of Judaism, I believe), Sufism, Seicho-No-le, Bantu, Yoruba! The list goes on forever.

It really makes me realize how underappreciated so many religions are! We usually only pay attention to the main ones. And not to mentions mixtures of religions (Ex: Christian Paganism).

I have a total of 78 religions in my Table of Contents right now. I guess I just decided to post this to say that we should try to recognize more religions, even when we have already decided on one ourselves. There are so many different beliefs out there!

For a huge list, go to this link and scroll down: http://www.adherents.com/

KEEP READING TO FIND OUT WHAT ELSE I PUT IN MY RELIGION TEXTBOOK:

For each religion in my Homemade Religion Textbook, there is an introduction, a basic fact sheet, basic beliefs, resources (to find books and websites), links, and pictures. On some, there is more information paperclipped to the page. For some of the main religions, there are CD's in the back filled with music, chants, meditations, etc. specified to that religion. There is also a section titled "Religion" in the back. This will have pictures, articles, quizzes, etc. on religion in general.

And if that's still not enough, I also found videos on many of the religions. I put them all on a CD that you can put in your computer to watch.

I'm really proud of my work :)

SORRY GUYS! I didn't mean to post it in this section. I was going to, but then switched it to 'Rants and Ramblings'. Sorry again! I didn't mean to put it up twice.

Sunni and Shi'ite are the two main branches of Islam, and they are constantly at conflict with each other. Hahaha, I can guarantee you that if you were to ask an Orthodox Jew if they were Sunni or Shi'ite, they'd probably slap you across the face. There is actually a very unknown branch of Christianity that is based on witchcraft, if I recall correctly. I came across the name of it once, but forget it. I don't know how it functions exactly, but I think they basically use the Bible as a Book of Shadows (which it basically is).
Just looking for the answers to life.
)O( Blessed be

Haha. I was actually already corrected about Sunn and Shi'ite. I don't know about the branch of Christianity that you talked about. So I'll definitely have to put some time in to research that. Thank you.
