The Music You Listen To
So many of the teenagers and young adults who contact me
through the website asking for help tend to listen to music that is dark,
moody, emo, negative, violent, sad, angry, and well, just plain sorry-ass.
You write to me and tell me that you're depressed, or you're bi-polar, or
you've lost your boyfriend or girlfriend and you want them back. You don't
know why you are having these problems. Well, there are many different
variables that contribute to your crappy life, but one thing that will
change your life immediately for the better will be to change the music you
are listening to. The Law of Attraction states that "like attracts like".
You will attract into your life people and circumstances that match your
current vibration. You may think that the music you listen to is not affecting
your attitude or your life, but I can assure you that it is. If you are
willing to try an experiment, you will quickly see that what I am telling
you is true. The experiment is simple. Listen to positive, happy music for a
week and see if you don't feel happier and more joyful for the life that you
have.
Also notice how
others react to you. Do you enjoy being around people who are angry, sad, or
moody? Then why do you think anyone would want to be around you when you are
feeling that way? I'm not saying that you have to always hide your feelings
from others, but many people never even bother to TRY to be happy. They
wallow in their sadness. It becomes a way of life for them. Many people
consider themselves "emo". Emo people have created an image for themselves
that is sad, angry, helpless, and basically just miserable. If your whole
image is one of negativity, how do you expect to ever have joy in your life?
When I was a teenager, I used to spend a great deal of
time feeling sorry for myself and pondering upon negative scenarios. Nobody
really understood about the power of thought back then, or if they did, they
didn't tell me about it. The consequences were that my dark thoughts
attracted violent, insane people into my life who abused me. One of these
people, a 22-year-old crack addict named Dean, likely would have killed me had he not
killed another person first and ended up in prison. I'll tell you about that
another time. It's an interesting story but, frankly, it scares me to talk
about him because I don't want to attract that energy back into my life by
thinking and talking about him. But I think it is an experience that I had
so that I can tell others about it and they
can learn from my mistakes. I also learned a great deal from it myself,
which is, of course, the main reason for going through difficult situations
in life.
Back in those
days, I listened to Metallica songs such as Fade to Black, Sanitarium, and
Master of Puppets. Some other artists and songs I listened to were
Gun's-n-Roses - "Used to Love Her (But I Had to Kill Her)", "You're F*cking
Crazy", and all the other violent and negative Guns n' Roses songs.
Guns n' Roses was
definitely my favorite band at the time. Remember the Motley Crϋe song,
"You're All I Need?" That was played all the time on the radio. No one
besides me seemed to notice that the lyrics said, "You're all I need, make
you only mine. (I love you), So I set you free, I had to take your
life...... You're all I need, you're all I need and I love you so, So I put
you to sleep." This was one of Motley Crϋe's most popular songs. I once
heard that Vince Neil claimed to be talking about his dog. The rest of the
lyrics to the song really don't support that idea though. Whatever he was
talking about, it didn't matter to me. I internalized it as a jealous love
song to a woman. I began believing that love was a violent affair and that,
as a female, I should expect to be mistreated by men because they were
unstable creatures who felt that women were objects to be possessed and
used. As a result of this type of thinking, I attracted just exactly that
kind of man into my life.
After watching the movie, "Fast Times at Ridgemont High" recently, I
realized just how an entire generation was brainwashed into believing that
girls were only on Earth to be used sexually by men. I felt that it was
incredibly irresponsible for Universal to release this movie to such a naive
population. People in the early eighties weren't nearly as savvy and jaded
as we are today. They believed the things they saw on movies. Ron thought
that "Fast Times" portrayed what relationships between girls and boys were
really supposed to be like. Actually, considering the amount of email I get
from kids who want to be like the witches they have seen on TV, maybe
today's kids are just as naive.
The point I want to make is that if you listen to dark
music, you will be a dark person. No one besides other dark people will want
to be around you. So you will sink into a pit of despair that you feel you
can't get out of. Depression is a horrible thing. There are the rare times
when depression can come on you as a result of a chemical imbalance in the
brain. A couple of years ago I had an episode where I laid in bed and cried
for two weeks straight. This was a result of my quitting smoking a few weeks
prior and I believe that my brain chemistry may have been readjusting.
Either that, or I was grieving the loss of cigarettes. There seemed no
reason for the despair. It's true that I haven't dealt with the issues from
my past, and that likely has a good deal to do with this depressive state I
found myself in, but even so, it's not as though I found myself dwelling on
past negative experiences during this time. I tend to believe that
depression is generally caused by allowing yourself to dwell on negative
thoughts for an extended period of time - weeks, months, or years. Your
brain is just like a dog or a child in the sense that you train it to think
or to react to situations in certain ways. If you continually fill your
brain with negative thoughts and feed it with negative music, movies, and
TV, you will become negative. This isn't exactly rocket science, but for
some reason, most people don't understand it until it is too late and they
are in the pit of despair.
Think of it this way... Everything is made of vibrating
energy (scientists will agree with this wholeheartedly). You are energy.
Music is energy. Other people are energy. TV shows are energy. The higher
your rate of vibration, the better off you are. All music that you listen is
going to be either above your current level of vibration or below your
level. If it is above your level then the music will elevate you and make
you feel better. If the music is below your vibrational level, then your
energy level must lower itself to meet the music. If you pay attention, you
will be able to feel your body telling you whether the music you are
listening to is good for you or bad for you. You may feel it in your gut or
maybe in your heart. You may feel it all over. It may simply be a knowing
that you get. However you get the information, you would do well to take
heed and follow your intuition. Otherwise, you will be acting like a bitch
later and your friends will be like, "What the hell is wrong with you?" and
you'll say, "I don't know, I just feel depressed today."
